Static-99 Training Workshop
State of the Art Assessment of Sexual Offenders
The Stable-2007 and Acute-2007 are to be used in conjunction with the Static-99 to form a comprehensive picture of risk of sexual reoffending that captures not only long-term risk potential, but also assists us in the treatment of offenders and management of risk for the supervision of offenders in the community. The Static-99 assesses risk from the standpoint of static (i.e., unchangeable) risk factors while the Stable-2007 examines the enduring dynamic risk factors that are amenable to intervention, and this can adjust the baseline of risk level. The Acute-2007 assesses the factors that are suggestive of sexual recidivism taking place in the near future and thus structures our supervision of offenders by highlighting the important factors worth attending to in order to decide when to intervene (i.e., this focuses on risk management for offenders who are at risk in the community setting).
Training
The training to administer, score, and interpret the Static-99, Stable-2007, and Acute-2007 is covered in a 2-day workshop presented by Dr. Andrew Harris, C.Psych. and Dr. Dana Anderson, C.Psych. The workshop is designed for front-line workers (e.g., psychologists, probation/parole officers, etc.). The training program can accommodate people with extensive experience with sex offenders as well as those new to the sex offender field, although certainly different regions have their own set of standards for people working in the field, and the training was developed with this variety in mind. The Static-99 is not recommended, without the appropriate training, for use in clinical or supervisory settings where decisions will be made regarding the treatment and/or management of actual offenders. When in the position of defending an assessment during an inquiry or court proceedings, professionals are often required to state their training and qualifications to administer the measures they have used, and a professional not trained is in a disadvantageous position in such circumstances. The Stable-2007 and Acute-2007 currently are available for use only by those who have participated in the training workshop.
The Workshop
The 2-Day workshop includes a research overview, specific instructions for administering and scoring the Static-99 and Stable/Acute 2007, and several hands-on exercises. In addition to large group discussions, the practice utilizes role-play, and small-group and individual exercises to become proficient in using the risk measures for both incarcerated and community-supervised offenders. The workshop is designed for all stakeholders in best practices risk assessment of sexual offenders, including treatment providers, supervising officers, managers, and researchers. Participants will not only learn the administration and scoring of the measures, but will also receive feedback and suggestions for obtaining information in adversarial contexts. Participants will also receive all of the measures, interview guides, and scoring sheets, with no restrictions on duplication for their own use.
Note: This is a workshop, not a seminar. Group size is limited to 42 participants.
